FirstMRI - First choice among area physicians, practitioners and patients since 1985

MR System Description

Our center houses three magnets to insure that we can offer prompt appointment times. Each of our three magnets is accredited by the American College of Radiology. Each is a GE Medical Systems 1.5 Tesla magnet with all the latest computer software that GE provides. Our high field magnets allow us to complete your exam much faster than an exam performed on a low field system and with much better image quality. Our open flare, short bore magnet reduces any feelings of claustrophobia.

Scheduling Procedure

At FirstMRI we understand the importance of providing appointments that meet the needs of your busy schedule. Our full time, dedicated scheduler will be ready to assist you with any appointment times or adjustments that you require.

Our center is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Our telephone number is (207) 945-4680 or toll free (800) 798-6654. You may also contact us by using our online contact form. For a map and directions to our facility, visit our directions page .

How the MRI System Works

Simply explained, a MR system works in this manner: when a body is placed within a magnetic field, its protons align with and rotate around the direction of that field. If a radio frequency (RF) signal of appropriate frequency is beamed through the body some of the protons absorb the RF energy and change direction or, in other words, resonate. When the RF signal is stopped, the protons return to their original position, releasing the absorbed energy and generating a signal that is picked up by an antenna and then processed by the computer into an image. Images are read by the center physicians and stored here so that a copy of your exam is always available.
